‘Kinesthetic learners’ do best by actually doing things. They learn better by taking a more ‘hands-on’ approach to studying, and typically do not enjoy sitting for long periods at a time and taking notes.

Common Characteristics found in ‘Kinesthetic Learners’:

  • Active and/or sporty
  • Don’t like to sit still and want to move around
  • Remembers what they do and what they experience
  • Can remember how to do things after only doing them once
  • Enjoys building and creating

Tips for Success:

  • Create and build models
  • Redo experiments and projects
  • Move around as you are studying
  • When trying to memorize words or spellings, then close your eyes and trace out the word with your finger
  • Do something while studying to help keep focus (i.e. squeezing a ball or listening to music)
  • Use flashcards; this can turn learning and recalling information into a game
  • Shorter study periods w/ shorter breaks
    • Kinesthetic learners tend to have short attention spans when studying, but that does not mean that they should be studying any less than others
  • Use examples when taking notes; try to relate the information to something you are interested in
    • This makes it easier for them to make connections and associations when comparing it to their own personal interests. This also allows them to become more interested in the topic and remember more information.
